Liberal groups taking ‘Cardboard Cory’ on a Colorado road trip
Cardboard Cory is back on the road. The paper replica of U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner deployed by campaigning liberals will make 11 stops in six days starting in Denver next week.
The groups are complaining that Gardner’s public events are not public enough, or at least not so they could show up and protest. Cardboard Cory has been a stand-in for Democratic groups to pose with for social media posts.
“Senator Gardner has zero real public events scheduled over the August recess,” Laura Packard, a stage 4 cancer survivor and health care activist, said in a statement. “In fact, he has not held a truly public event in more than 20 months and when he does meet with constituents, it is always a select group of supportive business owners, community members or local officials.”
She continued, “That’s why Cardboard Cory is doing the job that Senator Gardner refuses to do: traveling the state and actually listening to Coloradans about the type of leaders they want to see in D.C.”
Asked to respond, Gardner’s campaign pointed to his public events last week and this week, including a meet-and-greet Tuesday night in Minturn that Gardner’s campaign said was attended by several Democrats, including Sen. Kerry Donovan of Vail and state Rep. Dylan Roberts of Eagle, as well as local officials from both parties.
Donovan tweeted about the event with Gardner Tuesday morning to notify local press.
