Colorado to receive first shipment of latest vaccine by Friday
Colorado will receive 45,500 doses of the newly approved Johnson & Johnson vaccine by Friday, the state announced in a Monday afternoon statement.
The vaccine will be available to “eligible Coloradans … at a number of community vaccination sites across the state,” the Department of Public Health and Environment said in a press release. Friday will also mark the state’s latest shift to more vaccine priority groups, like those 60 and older, certain essential workers and Coloradans with two or more of select pre-existing conditions. Those groups in all total more than 950,000 residents.
The new Johnson & Johnson vaccine is a single-shot jab that is also less fragile when it comes to storage. While its efficacy is lower than the two current vaccines, it’s still more effective than the annual flu vaccine, and it has high rates of efficacy when it comes to preventing serious disease in those who do contract the virus.
“We are thrilled to be able to distribute a third safe and effective vaccine in the state of Colorado,” Eric France, the state’s chief medical officer, said in the statement. “The authorization of the Janssen vaccine will make it easier for the state to reach its vaccination goals as more people become eligible in the weeks to come. When it’s your turn to get a vaccine – whether it’s Moderna, Pfizer, or Janssen – I hope you choose to get it. With every dose administered, we are all safer and closer to ending this crisis.”
The introduction of this latest vaccine comes as Pfizer and Moderna, the other two vaccine-makers, have both promised to step up their production. Colorado will receive hundreds of thousands of doses in March; in January, the weekly shipment was a fraction of that.
Those increases have stepped up the state’s timetable for vaccinating Coloradans. While previous schedules called for the general public to being receiving vaccinations in June or later, Gov. Jared Polis said last week that doses could begin flowing into the general population as soon as mid- to late April.
No one vaccine is recommended over another; all are safe and effective, the state said.
