Bernie Sanders boosting staff, advertising in Colorado on heels of big fundraising month
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is beefing up his Colorado campaign’s staff and boosting advertising in the state following a record fundraising haul in January, his campaign said Thursday.
On the heels of a strong showing in the Iowa caucuses – finishing in what looks like an effective tie for first place with former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg – the Vermont senator’s campaign is spending $5.5 million on television and digital ads in 10 “Super Tuesday” states that vote on March 3, including Colorado, a Sanders spokesman said.
That’s after pulling in $25 million in January from nearly 650,000 donors in his best fundraising month to date, his campaign said.
“Bernie’s multiracial, multigenerational, people-driven movement for change is fueling 2020’s most aggressive campaign for president,” said Sanders campaign manager Faiz Shakir in a statement. “Working class Americans giving $18 at a time are putting our campaign in a strong position to compete in states all over the map.”
A spokesman for Sanders’ Colorado operation said the campaign will be adding field staff in the state, which Sanders won in 2016 when Colorado held caucuses.
A Sanders staffer told Colorado Politics in January that around 15,000 volunteers have signed up to work for Sanders in Colorado.
The Sanders campaign is adding advertising buys in Colorado, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Utah, and expanding its ad buys in California and Texas, the campaign said.
Sanders is one of 14 active Democratic presidential candidates on Colorado’s primary ballot, which starts going out to voters next week.
For the first time, unaffiliated voters will be able to vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary.
President Donald Trump is facing five challengers in the GOP primary in Colorado.
