‘Conversation About the Death Penalty’ to come to Denver on Feb. 11
The EJUSA Evangelical Network, the Christian Community Development Association and the Denver Seminary will host a “Conversation About the Death Penalty” on Feb. 11. The discussion will take place at the Seminary in Littleton at 6:30 p.m.
“Evangelicals believe all people should be treated fairly and with respect, but we have learned the death penalty is marred by racial bias,” said Heather Beaudoin, the senior manager of the EJUSA Evangelical Network. “It sends a message that the lives of people of color are valued less, just one of many reasons the death penalty should be ended.”
Beaudoin will moderate the discussion. One of the speakers will be Sharletta Evans, founder of 5280 Survivors. Her son, Casson Xavier “Biscuit” Evans, was murdered in a Denver drive-by shooting. Ray Krone, the one-hundredth inmate exonerated from death row since 1976, and Christian author Shane Claiborne will also join the panel.
On Jan. 31, a bill to repeal the death penalty passed the Colorado Senate on a vote of 19-13. It now heads to the House Judiciary Committee. Gov. Jared Polis said he supports the measure. Colorado currently has three inmates on death row, and has executed one person since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976.
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect that Casson Xavier “Biscuit” Evans was killed in Denver.
