Michael Bennet’s presidential campaign wins endorsement from Maine Rep. Jared Golden

Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bennet has landed an endorsement from a Maine congressman who said a voter told him the Colorado senator “doesn’t stand a chance.”

U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, a Marine veteran who unseated an incumbent Republican last cycle in a district won by Donald Trump, recalled a recent conversation in a statement released by the Bennet campaign Thursday.

“Talking about the Democratic presidential nomination last week, one voter described Senator Michael Bennet as ‘calm, thoughtful, honest and humble. In other words, he doesn’t stand a chance,'” Golden said.

“That’s the kind of cynicism too many of us have come to expect of our politics these days. These qualities should be exactly the things we look for in a leader.”

Barely registering in the polls and running a shoestring campaign, Bennet is putting all his chips on a strong performance in Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary.

Golden was elected to his seat in 2018 by a narrow margin under a ranked-choice voting system, which has been endorsed by Bennet.

“Bennet will fight to end gerrymandering so that voters can choose their representative, rather than representatives choosing their voters,” Golden said.

“He is committed to fighting corruption and putting an end to an era dominated by big money politics. And most importantly, after years of divisive leadership from Washington, Michael Bennet is committed to leading this country by example toward a more unified and thoughtful future.”

Golden was the only House Democrat to split his vote on the impeachment resolutions sent to the Senate in December, supporting the charge that Trump abused his power but voting against the charge the president obstructed Congress.

His endorsement could carry weight in neighboring New Hampshire, where Bennet is holding more than a dozen events in the next few days, but Golden won’t be able to vote for his favorite, since Bennet didn’t qualify for the ballot in Maine’s March 3 presidential primary.
