PCC, other 2-year colleges may offer 4-year nursing degrees

The shortage of nurses may be eased by a new state law authorizing two-year community colleges to offer four-year bachelor of science degrees in nursing. This includes Pueblo Community College, which supported House Bill 1086 before it passed the Colorado Legislature. Gov. John Hickenlooper let HB1086 become law despite his misgivings that it would allow community colleges to duplicate nursing degrees already available at four-year colleges and universities.

The nursing shortage is so acute, however, that it cries out for expanding four-year degrees to community colleges that are more accessible and affordable than large universities are to much of Colorado’s far-flung population.

PCC intends to expand its two-year nursing program to a bachelor’s degree and other area community colleges may do so if they choose.
