Colorado Politics reporter John C. Ensslin will be memorialized Monday night by the Denver Press Club, where he twice served as president.

The event, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., will take place at the Press Club, located at 1330 Glenarm Place in Denver. Admission is free, but RSVPs online are advisable due to limited space.

Ensslin was found dead in his Denver apartment on Monday. He was 65. He had covered Denver for Colorado Politics since March, after eight years politics and government in his home state of New Jersey.

Before that, he worked for nearly three decades for Denver and Colorado Springs newspapers.

Ensslin was the co-founder of the Denver Press Club’s annual Damon Runyon Award gala and member of the Press Club Hall of Fame. He also was the national president for the Society of Professional Journalists.

“John was kind, sincere and gentle,” Dan Petty, the Press Club’s president, said in a statement. “He was the consummate journalist, seeking compelling stories and telling the world about them – no matter the format.

“Trained as a print reporter, he taught himself how to produce and record podcasts. He supported journalists as they began their careers, offering advice on how to succeed in what has always been a difficult business. Two years ago, we renamed the largest of our Runyon scholarships for student journalists for John Ensslin.”
