Calling her a “trusted America First Fighter,” former President Donald Trump on Saturday endorsed U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert’s bid in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, where the two-term Republican is facing a crowded GOP primary after moving across the state to run for another term in a different seat.

“Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is a Proven Conservative and Effective Leader who delivers for Colorado, and our America First agenda,” Trump said in a post on the Truth Social platform. “She has led the fight to Impeach Joe Biden, Stop Illegal Immigration, Defend the Second Amendment, Protect our Wonderful Ranchers and Farmers, Support our Military and Veterans, Secure our Natural Resources to Pursue Energy Dominance, and Stand Up to the Radical Democrats who want to Destroy our Beautiful Country.”

“Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is a trusted America First Fighter, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District!” he added.

It’s the third time Trump has endorsed Boebert in her three congressional runs and the first endorsement Trump has made in a Colorado race this cycle.

Boebert is one of 11 Republicans running in a primary to replace retiring five-term GOP U.S. Rep. Ken Buck in the solidly Republican seat, which covers Colorado’s Eastern Plains and includes Douglas and parts of Larimer counties. Boebert announced late last year that she was moving from the Western Slope-based 3rd Congressional District, where she faced a competitive primary and risky bid for reelection, to the more reliably Republican district.

Boebert won an endorsement from House Speaker Mike Johnson just days after announcing her district switch.

Among the others seeking the GOP nomination in the 4th CD are Logan County Commissioner Jerry Sonnenberg, state Reps. Mike Lynch and Richard Holtorf, former state Sen. Ted Harvey and former talk radio host Deborah Flora.

Ahead of Colorado’s June 25 congressional primary, candidates are vying for spots on the primary ballot through the caucus and assembly process, which kicks off next week, and by gathering signatures on petitions, which are due March 19.

Boebert, who formally endorsed Trump’s presidential campaign last year, said in a statement that she is honored to have Trump’s support.

“It’s my honor to have the endorsement of the greatest President our country has ever known — Donald J. Trump,” Boebert said in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “It will be such a privilege to work alongside him in 2024 to deliver results for Colorado & get the entire country back on track!”

Trump’s endorsement comes three days before ballots are due in Colorado’s March 5 presidential primary, where the Republican frontrunner faces his lone remaining challenger for the nomination, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, on Super Tuesday, the same day 14 other states will count voters. On Saturday, Trump won Missouri’s Republican caucuses, notching his sixth consecutive win in GOP contests.

While Trump lost Colorado to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020 by a 13.5 percentage point margin, the Republican carried the vote within the boundaries of the 4th CD by 18.6 points.

Flora said in a statement to Colorado Politics that she isn’t daunted by Trump’s endorsement of her primary rival.

“Respectfully, the President got this one wrong,” Flora said in a text message. “We have heard from voters all over this 21-county district that they want someone who has lived and been fighting in this district for years. Someone who knows them and will represent them. My neighbors in CD4 want and deserve a conservative fighter they can be proud of who will bring new leadership instead of business as usual. I look forward to working with the President to deliver on the unique needs of my district.”

Sonnenberg said in an email that he’s most interested in winning the endorsement of the district’s voters.

“I support President Trump and want him to be elected again,” Sonnenberg said. “But respectfully, the only endorsement I care about is from the great people of this district, who I’ve been proud to serve honorably for two decades. I am confident I will earn their endorsement as someone who has spent my entire life working with these constituents.”

Calling himself a “huge supporter” of the former president, Harvey said in a statement to Colorado Politics that he doubts Trump’s endorsement will help Boebert win the nomination.

“As the former chairman of one of the largest pro-Trump super PACs, I am a huge supporter of President Trump,” Harvey said in a text message. “He is obviously very loyal to his congressional supporters in DC.”

Added Harvey: “Just as he endorsed Congressman Tipton in CD 3 in 2020, he then endorsed Boebert in 2022 as well. Yet, two years later Boebert’s Christian conservative friends and neighbors have said enough is enough. There is a reason she has been forced to desperately pack her bags, and move 240 miles to the east. Despite Trump’s loyal endorsement, I’m confident the voters of CD 4 will not be fooled by Lauren’s vain attempt to cling to power.”

In a text message, Holtorf said he plans to meet with his campaign staff at the beginning of next week “to discuss this announcement.”

A spokesman for Lynch’s campaign didn’t respond to a request for comment.
