RMNP to stay closed after most acres burned in its history
All of Rocky Mountain National Park will remain closed after nearly 29,000 acres burned, the most in its history, officials announced Friday.
The Cameron Peak and East Troublesome fires have burned 7,485 and 21,307 acres of the park, which was established in 1915.
Officials said they don’t know when the park will reopen but, when it does, only some areas will be accessible for safety purposes.
Park managers are assessing fire activity and safety hazards such as falling trees and downed power lines. Staff are plowing roads and parking lots and assessing outlying infrastructure.
Rocky Mountain National Park has been closed to visitors since Oct. 22 as a result of the fires.
The Cameron Peak and East Troublesome fires are the two largest fires to burn in Colorado’s recorded history.
Cameron Peak has burned 208,663 acres and is 64% contained. East Troublesome has burned 193,774 acres and is 32% contained.
