State releases COVID-19 guidance for ski areas and resorts

COVID-19 guidance for ski areas and resorts was released Monday regarding social distancing, mask wearing and group sizes.

The guidelines, drawn from existing COVID-19 industry regulations, were set by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

“Ski areas are a vital driver of the Colorado economy,” CDPHE said in a statement. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, these areas also present unique challenges for controlling virus transmission.”

The guidelines state ski areas should encourage mask wearing except while eating or skiing/riding, maintain 6-foot physical distance between parties at all times and require people exposed to COVID-19 to extend their stay at their own expense to complete isolation or quarantine.

Other requirements include screening guests and staff for COVID-19 symptoms, encouraging purchasing tickets online and limiting schools and private lessons to 10 people.

“Outdoor activities like skiing and snowboarding can be lower risk if done with proper precautions, both on and off the slopes,” said Jill Hunsaker Ryan, executive director of CDPHE. “We have to proceed carefully and be willing to evolve if necessary.”

The guidelines go into effect immediately. CDPHE is asking ski areas to work with local public health agencies to develop individual plans.

The initial draft of the COVID-19 guidance was released on Oct. 14 and edited to reflect community feedback.

The full guidelines are available at covid19.colorado.gov.
