Denver’s airport proves to be an ‘economic powerhouse’ for Colorado, study finds
Denver International Airport’s economic impact is on the rise, a new study found.
Between 2013 and 2018, the state’s largest airport annually generated about $33.5 billion in revenue, an increase of about 28%, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Division of Aeronautics’ 2020 Statewide Aviation Economic Impact Study.
“[The airport] is proud to remain the top economic engine for the state of Colorado, especially as we celebrate our 25th year,” airport CEO Kim Day stated in a Monday press release. “As we continue to grow, we are committed to bolstering Colorado’s future as an economic powerhouse.”
Since its opening in 1995, DIA has increased the number of people it serves by more than 125%, reaching nearly 70 million passengers in 2019.
“Just as important are the many jobs created” by the airport, Day said, pointing to the nearly 41% increase in filled positions since 2013. In 2018, DIA created nearly 260,000 jobs.
“The Division of Aeronautics is proud to partner with [DIA] and 73 other public-use airports as we work statewide to support aviation and airports as a key part of Colorado’s multi-modal transportation system,” CDOT Aeronautics Director David Ulane said in a statement. “The increased economic impact at [DIA] is echoed statewide, underscoring the importance and value of aviation across all of Colorado.”
The full economic impact study will be released in April.
