CCU’s Billy Graham exhibit to include Denver appearances

Through June 2020, Colorado Christian University will host an exhibit about the life and ministry of evangelical Christian pastor Billy Graham, who died in 2018.

Included in the exhibit is a presentation about Graham’s two “crusades” in Denver, which were revival-style, large-scale religious events. In July 1987, Graham spoke for 10 nights at Mile High Stadium. The crowd on opening night, July 18, was an estimated 33,200.

“Fifty-one percent of your population is single,” he told the audience. “And many of those people are lonely. And one of the supreme problems of modern society is loneliness. The modern city is a lonely place … . You cannot drink your way out of loneliness.”

It was his second visit to Denver, the first of which was in 1965.

CCU’s exhibit contains sermon notes from Graham’s Denver visits, a letter from Gov. Stephen McNichols to Graham, and a “Billy Graham Day” proclamation from Denver.

The exhibit will also showcase Graham’s relationship with world leaders and presidents, his portrayal in the media, and the story of his wife, Ruth Bell Graham. It is open on the Lakewood campus from Monday through Friday, although the hours for self-guided visits vary by day.

The Rev. Billy Graham gestures as he speaks to more than 33,000 people at Mile High Stadium in Denver on Friday, July 18, 1987. Graham began a 10-day crusade in Denver on Friday night expecting to draw out about 500,000 people.
