Polis channels Trump on ‘do-over’ to fight recall

Gov. Jared Polis and President Donald Trump, besides being wealthy politicians, have this much in common: They’re no fans of do-overs.

In an email appeal to potential donors to fight a recall of the Democratic governor Wednesday, Polis stated, “They couldn’t win at the polls last year, so they want a do-over – taking advantage of our state law in an attempt to undo the will of the voters.”

That sounded familiar to Colorado Politics.

When Trump announced his re-election campaign in Florida last month, he said, “With the Mueller report we won and now they want a do-over, they want a do-over,” Trump said. “Didn’t work out too well, let’s do it again.”

Mueller is special counsel Robert Mueller, who conducted nearly a two-year investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. He testified to congressional committees Wednesday.

The Polis pitch to donors continued, “Let’s be clear: this is an effort to turn democracy on its head and roll back the progress we’ve made. We can’t let it work.”

That also sounded a lot like the Republican president.

“Our radical Democrat opponents are driven by hatred prejudice and rage,” Trump said in Orlando. “They want to destroy you and they want to destroy our country as we know it. Not acceptable. It’s not going to happen.”

Polis asked for a donation from his “grassroots coalition” for as little as $5.

Other Democratic groups are raising money separately, should the recall make it on to the November ballot.

If it doesn’t, Polis would be able to use the donations for his 2022 re-election campaign.
