Colorado saw the nation’s second-highest voter turnout rate in the midterm election with 61.9 percent of active voters participating, Secretary of State Wayne Williams’ office reported Tuesday.

Minnesota was No. 1, at 64.3 percent.

New ballot numbers also show that women voters outpaced men in Colorado by 112,000 ballots.

The latest numbers show 2,581,426 Coloradans voted last week. The largest voting group by age was those 41 to 60 years old for both men and women. Those ages 26 to 40 were the second largest voting group. And compared to 2014, 974,000 more Coloradans voted in 2018.

Ballots are still being processed and counted, in part because federal law requires an eight-day wait after election day so that military and overseas voters’ ballots can be processed. The deadline for processing those ballots, as well as “curing” signatures (ballots where there’s a question about the voter’s signature) is the close of business on Wednesday, according to the Secretary of State’s office.

County clerks will update results on Thursday. That may finally put to rest several races that in early returns teetered on the edge of automatic recounts:

Colorado went to the all-mail ballot system for the first time in the 2014 mid-terms. The state also has same-day voter registration, meaning voters can still register to vote up until 6:59 p.m. on Election Day.
