City council members correctly view Pueblo’s leading nonprofit organizations as community assets – which they definitely are. When 2018 budget decisions are made in the weeks ahead, we hope the council will back up last week’s favorable discussion about increasing city contributions, most notably to the following worthy recipients:

The Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce has been receiving $375,000 this year in city assistance and Council President Steve Nawrocki recommended an increase to $475,000 next year. The tireless efforts of Chamber President Rod Slyhoff, staff, board and volunteers have contributed significantly to such community projects as the Regional Tourism Authority expansion of the Pueblo Convention Center and Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo. For as long as we can remember, the chamber has been a great supporter and promoter of the Colorado State Fair, a true community asset.

Increasing the city’s assistance is more than justified by the chamber’s year-round promotion of tourism that definitely has a positive impact on Pueblo’s economy.
