Trump supporters set to rally Friday at Capitol

Former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo will be among the headliners at an outdoor rally to show support for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Friday afternoon in Denver.

Organizers said they didn’t expect Trump to attend the rally but are counting on a good turnout at the state Capitol the same day the real estate mogul is scheduled to address thousands of conservatives just blocks away.

Trump is set to speak at the Western Conservative Summit – along with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin – at the Colorado Convention Center on Friday morning and then attend a high-dollar luncheon fundraiser.

“Let’s show our support to help Donald Trump to victory and to defeat Hillary,” says an email announcing the outdoor rally. “Come early, show your support, meet other supporters, and learn how to win Colorado.”

The rally is planned for 1 p.m. on Friday on the west steps of the Capitol. Organizers are urging fans to wear their Trump hats and T-shirts to demonstrate support for the candidate.

Trump last visited Colorado in October when he took part in a GOP presidential candidate debate at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He hasn’t attended any public events in the state since kicking off his campaign last summer.

Speakers at the rally include Tancredo and Republican congressional candidates Casper Stockham and George Athanosopolous, organizers told The Colorado Statesman.

After delivering the 10:30 a.m. speech at the convention center, Trump is scheduled to appear at a fundraiser for the Trump Victory joint fundraising committee. The luncheon is co-chaired by former Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan and former MillerCoors chairman Pete Coors, among others.

The fundraiser is planned for Shanahan’s Cherry Hills Village home and carries a minimum price tag of $10,000 per couple, according to an invitation obtained by The Statesman. It’ll cost $50,000 for couples to get a “VIP meeting” and photo with Trump in addition to lunch.

Other co-chairs of the event include Barbara and Bill Cagle, Gayle and Steve Mooney, Nancy and Mike Shaw, Verna and Bill Pauls, Merrill Shields and Ray Thomasson, Carol and Larry Mizel, Charlotte and Tim Travis and Peggy Shanahan.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be divided between the Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee and 11 state Republican parties, including Arkansas, Connecticut, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming.
