Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams saw a familiar face when he visited The Durango Herald newsroom Friday: the new city editor, Sue McMillin, used to work at the Colorado Springs Gazette.

McMillin’s career at the Gazette spanned more than 30 years, and she served as new director when she left in December. Williams, who lives in Colorado Springs, frequently appears in the newspaper.

He served two terms as an El Paso County commissioner and one term as the El Paso clerk and recorder before being elected secretary of state in 2014.

“A lot of times I told reporters to call Wayne Williams’ office,” McMillin recalled.

Williams stopped by the Herald newsroom Friday afternoon after meeting earlier that day with Dolores County Clerk LaRita Randolph in her office in Dove Creek, having lunch with Montezuma County Clerk Kim Percell in Cortez and stopping by La Plata County Clerk Tiffany Parker’s office in Durango. ( The next day he would visit with Mesa County Clerk Sheila Reiner in Grand Junction.)

In his four-day trip, Williams met with nine county clerks, visited five newsrooms, attended three Go Code Colorado challenges and spoke at Club 20. (More details of some of those visits are available on this blog.) And after finally arriving home in Colorado Springs, Williams the next day, on Sunday attend his fourth Go Code Challenge.

“The competition, in its third year, challenges entrepreneurs and software developers to use data from state sources to help businesses and other others make better decisions. Three of the 10 state finalists will win a $25,000, one-year contract from the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office to finish building their applications.”
