Colorado legislators’ cars vandalized at Capitol
The Colorado State Patrol has launched an investigation into who vandalized two cars owned by state legislators outside the Capitol building this week.
In a news release Thursday, CSP officials said the vandalism took place on the east side of the Colorado State Capitol parking lot on Wednesday.
In the parking lot, two vehicles about 30 yards away from each other sustained damage, according to the CSP.
The vehicles are owned by Rep. Sean Camacho, a Democrat, and Sen. Byron Pelton, a Republican, CSP officials said.
CSP officials noted the two vehicles were believed to be randomly vandalized.
A rock was thrown at Camacho’s vehicle, a 2022 Rivian SUV, and broke the windshield, according to CSP. Meanwhile, Pelton’s vehicle, a 2024 Ford Bronco, was found with an expletive carved onto the hood, CSP officials said.
Video footage shows a suspect damaging the vehicles around 9:36 a.m., according to CSP.
Authorities said the video shows the suspect leaving the Capitol Circle parking lot, walking west on Colfax to Broadway, then going north on Broadway out of the camera’s view, according to CSP.
Officials said the suspect is believed to be a male wearing blue jeans and a dark-colored jacket and he was carrying a tote shopping bag.
In the aftermath, Pelton told The Denver Gazette he is fine and his car is going to be OK.
The Republican state senator blamed increased crime in Denver, ironically pointing to the other victim of Wednesday’s pair of vandalisms.
“It’s kind of fitting it is in Sean Camacho’s district where we are seeing crime increasing in Colorado,” Pelton said, especially, he added, surrounding cars being vandalized.
The Denver Gazette reached out to Camacho’s office for further comment.
CSP asks anyone with information to call its dispatch at (303) 866-3660 with reference number ES250090.
