Democrat Suhas Subramanyam defeats Mike Clancy for Wexton’s Virginia House seat

Democratic state Sen. Suhas Subramanyam defeated Republican Mike Clancy for retiring Rep. Jennifer Wexton’s (D-VA) Virginia House seat.

Subramanyam trounced Clancy for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District with 52.1% of the vote and 99% of ballots counted so far. The Associated Press called the race at 10:49 p.m. ET.

Subramanyam and Clancy, a tech company executive, faced off to win Wexton’s open seat. Democrats, in particular, were looking to keep the seat in their grasp, and Republicans saw an opportunity to flip a blue seat.

Virginia has proved to be a battleground state for House races, with multiple districts posing to reposition the balance of power in Washington.

In September 2023, Wexton announced she would not be running for reelection in 2024 due to a diagnosis of Progressive supranuclear palsy, which has affected her ability to speak, move, and hear.

Wexton has served in Congress since 2019.
