East Colfax Neighborhood Association proposed bylaws add immigrant, renter representatives to board
The East Colfax Neighborhood Association will meet on Feb. 18 to vote on its revised bylaws, including the proposed addition of up to four board members representing the immigrant community and residents of large apartment buildings.
In addition to a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer, there are at least six at-large board seats outlined in the draft bylaws. Four of which would be reserved for representatives of “communities, such as the Ethiopian, Burmese, and Latina/o/x communities, that have significant or longstanding presence in the neighborhood,” the language reads.
“Large apartment complexes will also have reserved board positions, including Garden Court Apartments, Advenir Apartments, and Hope Communities / Hidden Brook Apartments,” the bylaws continue.
The document clarifies that a board member may represent both an immigrant community and live in a large apartment complex. The proposal also makes voting membership for the group free.
The East Colfax Neighborhood Association covers a roughly-rectangular area bounded by Yosemite Street to the east, East 11th Avenue to the south, Quebec Street to the west, and Montview Boulevard to the north.
According to Shift Research Lab, a data analysis company for metro Denver, whites make up 51% of the neighborhood’s population, and more than a quarter of residents are foreign born. African Americans and Latinos each comprise approximately one-quarter of the population.
The meeting will occur at 6:30 p.m. at Counterpath, 7935 E. 14th Ave. at Tamarac Street.
