Sportsmen applaud House vote on CORE Act

A group representing hunters and anglers celebrated the passage of the CORE Act in the House of Representatives today.

“The CORE Act balances public access to fishing, hunting and recreation in these special places with protection of pristine headwaters that support native trout populations,” said Scott Willoughby of Trout Unlimited. “Following today’s vote, we look forward to working with the Colorado delegation to move this bill forward in the Senate.”

The CORE Act would preserve 400,000 acres of public land in Colorado. U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Boulder, and Sen. Michael Bennet sponsored the bill.

The bill’s provisions relevant to wildlife include the protection of the Thompson Divide, 11.5 miles of fishing in the Gunnison River Basin, and 2.5 miles of cutthroat trout habitat in the Colorado River.

A poll last week found that two-thirds of Western Slope voters supported the legislation, and their support was particularly strong among those who regularly participated in outdoor recreation activities.
