State Rep. Barbara McLachlan visits middle school for ag group’s anniversary

Colorado state Rep. Barbara McLachlan visited Escalante Middle School in Durango on Friday to encourage young people to learn about agriculture.

McLachlan was there for the 100th anniversary of the American Farm Bureau Federation, which lobbies for agriculture benefits, reports the Durango Herald.

The average age of farmers in Colorado is around 60, McLachlan told the Herald. Escalante’s agriculture classes have 105 middle schoolers learning about the field.

“I want to encourage that next generation to take over,” McLachlan said.

Their teacher, Lu Boren, has been showing the students how to can produce.

“I want them to know you take that good, fresh local produce and you preserve it for the winter. … Nobody is teaching them this anymore,” Boren said.
