Denver business owner joins Colorado U.S. Senate race

A Denver businesswoman has joined the crowded 2020 Democratic field for the Colorado U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Cory Gardner.

Denise Burgess joins nine Democrats already in the race. The primary winner will take on Gardner next November.

Burgess owns a Denver construction company called Burgess Construction and Engineering Services.

She stated on her campaign website that she is not a politician. “I’m a builder (literally) who knows how to get things done,” she said.

She also noted that she is a single mother and and the only girl in a family of three brothers.

My father taught me how to play on the field and show strength in the boardroom,” she stated on her website. “My mom, Lucille, taught me compassion and to try to understand the other person’s point of view. I have the experience necessary to bring some Colorado common sense to the Senate old boys’ club.”

Burgess’ announcement comes soon after three candidates dropped out of the race. Mike Johnston suspended his campaign on Sept. 3; John Walsh did so on Sept. 11; and Dan Baer followed suit on Sept. 12. Walsh and Baer each endorsed John Hickenlooper upon their exits.
