Call Michael Bennet an optimist.

While many – OK, practically everybody – in the chattering class give the U.S. senator from Colorado little chance of bouncing to the top of the presidential heap for Democrats hoping to take on Donald Trump, Bennet’s campaign sounded as if it was just getting started Friday.

Bennet for America announced it will celebrate opening a national campaign headquarters in Lakewood.

But Bennet, who has been missing-in-action from town halls in Colorado for about a year, won’t be there.

Instead, his wife, Susan Daggett, will do the honors.

Daggett, an environmental defense lawyer and law professor, will gather with “campaign staff and community members.”

Bennet’s campaign did not immediately respond to an email asking where Bennet would be Tuesday.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the headquarters office at 1435 Garrison St. in Lakewood.

Bennet is not polling strongly and didn’t make the field for the latest Democratic debate.

Friday morning, BuzzFeed News posted a story headlined, “Why Is Michael Bennet Still Running For President?”

“One of the reasons I ran for president and I’ve stayed in the race is that I do think there’s a real base of the Democratic Party, and these are flesh-and-blood human beings who are trying to carve out a better future for their kids and who are largely being ignored by the antics on social media,” Bennet told BuzzFeed in the article.

Another presidential candidate, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, will hold a campaign rally at 6 p.m. Monday in Denver’s Civic Center.
