Here’s some alumni news for Colorado Capitol politicos: The Denver Post’s former boy wonder political reporter is getting big-time attention for an advocacy-oriented documentary.

Chris Frates founded the storytelling company Storyline in 2017, after a stint at CNN. He continues to co-host the “Political Persuasions” podcast with radio veteran Mike O’Meara and hosts “Politics Inside Out” weekends on SiriusXM’s POTUS channel.

Frates worked at the Post from 2002 to 2007, helping to cover the legislature and the 2006 election and higher education in 2007, before moving back to Washington, D.C., to ply his trade. 

Besides three years as an investigative and political reporter for CNN, Frates has worked at the National Journal and Politico since departing Colorado.

Tuesday his company announced winning two prizes in this year’s Telly Awards, which honors excellence in  video and television content across all platforms.

Storyline won bronze prizes for social responsibility and cinematography in the non-broadcast category for “Our Town is Killing Us,” a piece about an Ohio town impacted by lax federal oversight of one of the world’s largest hazardous waste incinerators.

21st Century Fox and HBO finished first in the two categories, respectively.
