Mary Young sworn in as representative for Colorado House District 50

Mary Young of Greeley, a school psychologist and wife of state Treasurer Dave Young, was sworn into office Thursday as the new state representative from House District 50.

Mary Young was chosen by a Democratic House District 50 vacancy committee on June 2. She replaces former state Rep. Rochelle Galindo, who abruptly announced in May that she was resigning her seat in the Colorado House of Representatives. Gallindo added in a statement that “the allegations against me are false” without saying what the allegations were.

“I am honored and excited to represent the hardworking people and families of HD 50,” Young said in a statement released by House Democrats. “I look forward to working on the core issues impacting our community, and to bring my experience to the table to improve mental health and K-12 education and expand access to services for individuals with disabilities.”

Young has also worked as a special education teacher.

Speaker of the House KC Becker of Boulder said Young will bring “a deep knowledge to the legislature with her experience as a school psychologist and a special education teacher. We are all proud to have her joining the team as we work towards bipartisan solutions for the problems facing Coloradans across the state.”

The new state legislator holds a doctoral degree in school psychology from the University of Northern Colorado, a master’s degree in teaching from Duke University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from St. Mary’s of Notre Dame.

Rep. Mary Young, D-Greeley, takes the oath of office Thursday from Speaker of the House KC Becker of Boulder. She is joined by her husband, state Treasurer Dave Young.
