The state’s largest advocacy organization for farmers and ranchers is sending assistance to two south Colorado counties hard-hit by wildfires.

The Colorado Farm Bureau Foundation said Thursday it’s donating $20,000 to go directly to individuals affected by the Spring Creek Fire, which has burned more than 108,000 acres in Huerfano and Costilla counties.

That money will go along with more assistance from Colorado Farm Bureau Insurance, as well as money being raised from donors by the bureau’s foundation.

The Farm Bureau said Thursday that 100 percent of donations will go to victims.

“The fire laid waste to the property and homes of many farmers, ranchers and families in the area,” Don Shawcroft, President of the Colorado Farm Bureau, said in a statement. “Many families were tragically impacted by this disaster. We hope that this donation can help lessen the pain for these families, even if it’s only a little bit.”

The fire was 91 percent contained on Thursday. It began on June 27 five miles northeast of Fort Garland. After law enforcement determined it was human-caused, Danish immigrant Jesper Joergensen, 52, was arrested on charges of arson. The fire, which has burned 132 structures, is one of the largest in state history, consuming

“For many, recovery is going to be long and hard,” Shawcroft said. “While we know these donations won’t solve everything, we hope that they help start the rebuilding process.”
