DENVER – The state of Colorado suspended the license of a company operating a youth detention facility after determining the teen girls were no longer safe.

KMGH-TV reports the decision followed a July 7 incident at the Betty K. Marler Youth Service Center in south suburban Denver.

Some girls climbed onto the roof of a building and threatened to assault anyone who approached. One reportedly threatened to jump off and others engaged in sexual behavior.

The state says after returning to their units, three girls used glass from a broken light to cut themselves, causing injuries that required stitches.

The health department says the facility was under a performance improvement plan at the time. The state suspended the license of Rite of Passage Inc. and moved the girls to other facilities.

Officials with Rite of Passage did not return a phone call seeking comment.
