KUNC’s Bente Birkeland reported late Wednesday night that a sexual harassment complaint against Republican Sen. Randy Baumgardner of Hot Sulphur Springs has been found “credible,” according to the woman who filed the complaint.

The woman is a former legislative aide and told Birkeland she learned the results of the investigation on Tuesday from a Senate staffer. “The woman said the staffer told her ‘the evidence suggests there should be a consequence,'” according to the KUNC report.

Baumgardner is chair of the Senate Transportation Committee and this year is a sponsor of the Senate Republicans’ top priority bill, Senate Bill 1, which seeks to put $300 million of existing state revenues into transportation.

Senate Republicans reacted to the news this morning with a statement from Senate President Kevin Grantham of Cañon City.

“We remain bound by confidentiality requirements that exist to protect the integrity, fairness and legality of an ongoing [their emphasis] complaint review process …. We are not free to detour from that process simply because someone shares something with the press. If and when we can say something, we will. Until then, we will continue to follow and respect the process.”

Baumgardner is one of four lawmakers – two House Democrats and two Senate Republicans – who have been accused of sexual harassment or sexual misconduct. Democratic Rep. Paul Rosenthal of Denver was cleared of a misconduct charge earlier this month by the Speaker of the House because the alleged event occurred before he was a lawmaker.

At least three complaints have been filed against Democratic Rep. Steve Lebsock of Thornton; that investigation is ongoing, as is one against Republican Sen. Jack Tate of Centennial.

On Thursday House lawmakers unveiled signs they plan to display in their offices declaring those spaces “harassment-free.”
