The Pueblo Chieftain: When crisis meets opportunity
“Never let a good crisis go to waste.” It’s an expression that has been attributed to various people throughout history. And while some might debate exactly what that means, let us offer an even more direct suggestion for the Colorado General Assembly: “Never let a good opportunity go to waste.”
Actually, as legislators return to Denver this week for the start of another legislative session, both crisis and opportunity exist within state government.
The opportunity is made possible thanks to a huge windfall in expected tax collections. According to Senate President Kevin Grantham, our state’s booming economy is expected to produce more than $745 million in new state revenue. On top of this, Grantham said the new federal tax reform law should provide the state with an additional $270 million to $300 million.
