Philanthropists William and Kathy Hybl among recipients of Colorado Governor’s Citizenship Medals
Colorado Springs philanthropists William and Kathy Hybl are among those set to receive the Colorado Governor’s Citizenship Medals for contributing to the state.
The medals are a “tribute to the idea that each of us, no matter our path, has the opportunity to make a significant impact on our state,” Gov. John Hickenlooper said in a statement. “These individuals and companies have helped push Colorado forward, inspiring others along the way.”
The Hybls will be honored with the Vanguard Legacy medal for their work “promoting and enhancing the well-being of Coloradans” throughout their career, the governor’s office said in a release, adding, “The Hybls are philanthropic and community leaders for not only southern Colorado, but the entire Centennial State.” William Hybl is chairman and CEO of El Pomar Foundation and president emeritus of the United States Olympic Committee.
This year’s Emerging Community Leader medal goes to Boulder cyclist Taylor Phinney, a Boulder cyclist Hickenlooper said is “renowned for his laid back persona, tenacity on the bike and leadership among his international teammates.”
Brad Feld, managing director of Boulder venture capital firm the Foundry Group, is the recipient of the Growth and Innovation medal for leading with “exceptional ingenuity and growth” while inspiring others.
In addition to co-founding Techstars, Mobius Venture Capital and Intensity Ventures. Feld chairs the National Center for Women & Information Technology, co-chairs Startup Colorado and the Global EIR Coalition, and sits on the boards of Path Forward, the Kauffman Fellows, and Defy Ventures.
Mile High United Way President and CEO Christine Benero is set to receive the Public and Community Service medal. Before her current position, she was president and CEO of the American Red Cross Mile High Chapter and was director of the Office of Public Liaison for the Corporation for National and Community Service and served in the administrations of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
Fort Collins-based Otter Products – one of the fastest-growing private companies in the country – and the associated OtterCares Foundation will get the Corporate Citizenship medal. The manufacturer of premium protective cases for smartphones and tablets lives up to its “We Grow to Give” mission, the governor’s office said.
Denver’s Emily Griffith, founder of the Opportunity School that bore her name more than 100 years ago, is awarded the Colorado Mountain Leader medal – intended for a deceased community leader or an enduring state organization. Known today as Emily Griffith Technical College, Hickenlooper said it continues to live up to the motto coined by Griffith: “For All Who Wish to Learn.”
A medals presentation is scheduled for Nov. 16 at the History Colorado Center in Denver.
