Fund the arts center

Boosting funding for the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center is a real investment in our local cultural life that draws visitors from out of town and out of state to Pueblo.

That’s why we support the arts center’s request for an increase in its annual allowance from Pueblo County to $575,000 in 2018, up from $500,000 this year. We also support the Pueblo City Council’s tentative plan to help the center with $50,000 in lodging tax money next year.

While both requests would be put to very good use, the county has the primary role as the owner of the arts center property. In fact, the county’s annual allowance was $800,000 in 2013 when it also used to cover the arts center’s janitorial, landscaping, daily maintenance and system upkeep expenses.
