This is something you don’t see every day … or any day. Planned Parenthood is applauding Colorado’s very conservative Republican-led Senate for its work on an abortion bill.

Senate Bill 284, titled “A Woman’s Right To Accurate Health Care Information,” died on the Senate floor Thursday when GOP Sens. Don Coram of Montrose and Beth Martinez-Humenik of Thornton joined opponents in a chamber with 18 Republicans and 17 Democrats.

The Republican-sponsored bill would have required doctors to give women considering abortion “full and accurate information” before the procedure and ask women to sign a document accepting or refusing the information, among other things abortion rights supporters don’t like.

The Colorado proposal included legal risks for doctors, “making a physician’s noncompliance with the requirements unprofessional conduct and making a violation of the requirements a crime.”

The unclassified misdemeanor would have included a fine up to $1,000 per violation. Click here for a lot more information about the bill from legislative analysts.

Such bills are routine the abortion debate nationwide, and this one was dead on arrival if it had gotten out of the Senate, when it went before Democrats’ 38-27 majority in the House.

After Senate Bill 284 died Thursday, Sarah Taylor-Nanista, VP Public Affairs, Planned Parenthood Votes Colorado, had some faint words of praise for the upper chamber as a body, but not of those Republicans who voted in favor of the bill.

“Planned Parenthood is glad to see the measure defeated, but the fact that it got to the Senate floor shows there is still an extreme faction in the Senate that is out of step with everyday Coloradans’ lives,’ she said.

“Under the facade of offering more information” to pregnant patients, the bill would have made it mandatory for doctors to describe in extreme and unnecessary detail their pregnancy’s ultrasound, whether or not it was appropriate for the patient. Isn’t that really the ultimate in government over-regulation?

“There were a number of awful proposals in the bill that would interfere with women’s health issues, none of which are medically necessary or scientifically supported. Planned Parenthood strongly opposes bills such as these which really are about shaming women and scaring doctors.”
