Athlete agents registration bill proposed by commission

A bill addressing the registration of agents of professional athletes is among a handful of measures recommended for introduction in the 2017 General Assembly by the Colorado Commission on Uniform State Laws.

Other proposed bills are a Revised Uniform Unclaimed Property Act, a Uniform Unsworn Declarations Act to permit the use of unsworn declarations made under penalty of perjury in state courts when the declaration is made inside the U.S., a Uniform Wage Garnishment Act, and a Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts.

The Colorado commission is one of 50 such bodies, representing each state, who meet once a year to come up with proposed laws, or changes to existing laws, to make them more uniform across the country.

The commission’s members are attorney and Sen.-elect Robert S. Gardner, retired attorney Thomas T. Grimshaw, Colorado Center on Law and Policy Executive Director Claire B. Levy, attorney Anne L. McGihon, attorney Donald E. Mielke, Colorado Office of Legislative Legal Services Managing Senior Attorney Thomas Morris, former office director Charles W. Pike, St. Vrain Valley Schools Executive Director of Legal and Governmental Affairs, Community Outreach Brandon C. Shaffer, former Democratic state Sen. Pat Steadman, and Republican state Rep. Yeulin Willett.

Last year, two of the commission’s five recommended bills were signed into law: Uniform Trust Decanting and Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets measures.
