MOLLY BROWN HOUSE MUSEUM

Denver

News: History buffs and others interested in learning more about the colorful life led by Margaret “Molly” Tobin Brown, a survivor of the sinking of the Titanic, are invited to attend the July 18 Margaret’s Birthday Tea Soiree held at the historic Molly Brown House Museum.

It begins at 5:30 p.m., and tickets — $35 for Historic Denver members and $45 for non-members — include birthday cake and tea treats, along with a specialty birthday cocktail or mocktail. They can be purchased by visiting mollybrown.org

In attendance will be two of Molly’s great-granddaughters: Helen, a speaker, fundraiser and dog mom, and Lynne, who resides in Santa Fe with her three cats and enjoys gardening, studying the Upanishads, a series of Hindu sacred treatises written in Sanskrit, circa 800-200 BC.

Guests also will be able to view the museum’s latest exhibit, See Justice Done: The Legacy of the Titanic Survivors’ Committee, which contains such never-before-seen Titanic artifacts as a letter that Titanic survivor Archibald Gracie had written to a friend, on Titanic stationery before the sinking, that included a foreboding message: “It is a fine ship but I shall await my journey’s end before I pass judgment on her.”

About the organization: Located at 1340 Pennsylvania St., Denver, the Classic Queen Anne and Richardsonian Romanesque home was built in the 1880s for Isaac and Mary Large, who had made their fortune in silver mining. Shortly after its completion, the Larges lost their fortune in the silver market crash, and in 1894, they sold the William Lang-designed home to James Joseph and Margaret “Molly” Brown. The house eventually fell into disrepair, and on Dec. 11, 1970, Historic Denver was formed and began a grassroots effort to save the house from demolition. Today, it is a museum that welcomes some 45,000 visitors annually.
