Democrat Michael Bennet’s Colorado gubernatorial campaign racks up more than 100 new endorsements
U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet’s gubernatorial campaign on Thursday announced more than 100 new endorsements from current and former elected officials, business owners, nonprofit executives and community leaders for the Colorado Democrat’s bid to replace term-limited Gov. Jared Polis after next year’s election.
The new crop pushes Bennet’s total number of high-profile backers past 130, his campaign said, including three speakers of the Colorado House, three state Senate presidents, 24 county commissioners, 19 mayors and a former Denver Broncos quarterback.
Five of the local officials throwing their support behind Bennet had previously endorsed Attorney General Phil Weiser, who launched his campaign for governor in January, months before Bennet’s surprise entry in the primary. Two of Bennet’s endorsers say they’re now formally supporting both Bennet and Weiser.
Bennet has received campaign contributions from more than 5,000 unique donors, his campaign said. The current fundraising quarter ends on June 30, and state-level candidates will have to file campaign finance reports by July 15. Weiser reported in April that his campaign raised more than $1.9 million in the first quarter from more than 4,000 donors.
Bennet kicked off his campaign in April alongside supporters U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper; U.S. Reps. Joe Neguse and Jason Crow; current and former Denver Mayors Mike Johnston, Michael Hancock and Wellington Webb; state Senate President James Coleman; and state House Speaker Julie McCluskie.
Newly unveiled backers include former Senate Presidents Steve Fenberg and Leroy Garcia, former House Speakers Alec Garnett and Mark Ferrandino, and Brian Griese, a nonprofit leader and former Broncos quarterback. Also on Bennet’s list are Fitzsimons Innovation Community CEO Kelly Brough, Colorado Water Congress President Christine Arbogast and former Ohio Gov. Richard Celeste.
Those who switched their endorsement in the primary are Gunnison County Commissioner Jonathan Houck, La Plata County Commissioner Marsha Porter-Norton, Chaffee County Commissioner Gina Lucrezi, Lakewood City Council Member Roger Low, and Former Eagle County Commissioner Kathy Chandler Henry. The co-endorsers are State Sen. Janice Marcham and Thornton City Council Member Karen Bigelow.
Bennet said in a statement that he was honored to have the support of his endorsers.
“We’re united in the belief that Colorado is the best state in America, not just because of what we have, but because of who we are,” Bennet said. “Together, we can make it even better by building an economy that works for everyone and a democracy that belongs to all of us. Washington’s dysfunction won’t solve our biggest challenges — we will.”
Weiser lists more than 100 endorsers on his campaign site, including former Gov. Roy Romer, his campaign chair; former U.S. Sen. Tim Wirth; former U.S. Reps. Ed Perlmutter and David Skaggs; former Senate Presidents Morgan Carroll, Brandon Schaffer; and former state House Speaker Terrance Carroll.
Nearly a dozen Republicans are running for the office, including former U.S. Rep. Greg Lopez, state Sen. Mark Baisley, state Rep. Scott Bottoms, Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell and former congressional candidate Joshua Griffin.
Colorado’s primary election is June 30, 2026.
