Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is warning Colorado Springs residents and visitors to be aware of coyotes in the area during denning months.

The warning comes after two recent attacks on dogs that were on 6-foot leashes with their owners. One attack was reported near Palmer Park and the other at Rockrimmon Open Space.

In a press release, CPW said that coyotes can become aggressive toward perceived threats to defend their young while new pups are being born.

According to CPW, coyotes generally have their young around February and will raise their pups in dens through June.

CPW also advises residents to keep their pets leashed while on walks and indoors at night in fully enclosed kennels.

If you do see a coyote, CPW says to give it plenty of space. Do not run or turn your back, and be as big and loud as possible. Shout in a loud authoritative voice, wave your arms, clap your hands, and throw objects at the coyote. Face the coyote and slowly back away if the coyote does not leave the area.

CPW reports that wildlife will be more visible in backyards, open spaces, and on trails from now until the end of June.
