Democratic AG candidate Michael Dougherty endorsed by 90 Colorado officials, community leaders

Democratic attorney general candidate Michael Dougherty, Boulder’s district attorney, on Wednesday announced endorsements from 90 current and former district attorneys, sheriffs, legislators, mayors, local officials and community leaders from throughout Colorado.

Among those throwing support behind Dougherty are two former U.S. attorneys — one Democrat and one Republican — and two of the primary rivals Dougherty faced before withdrawing from the 2018 Democratic primary for attorney general to fill a vacancy created when the previous Boulder County district attorney stepped down. The former district attorney Dougherty replaced is also among the candidate’s endorsers.

Dougherty, a veteran prosecutor who at one point headed the criminal division at the attorney general’s office, is running to take over after incumbent Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, a Democrat, faces term limits after next year’s election. Former state House Speaker Crisanta Duran is also running in next year’s primary, with more candidates expected to launch campaigns in coming months.

The list of Dougherty’s endorsers is heavy on Boulder County Democrats but also boasts 10 current and former district attorneys from up and down the Front Range, across the Western Slope and Southern Colorado, including Stan Garnett, Dougherty’s predecessor in the 20th Judicial District. Sheriffs in Dougherty’s corner include the incumbents from San Juan, Summit, Boulder and Jefferson counties and former sheriffs from Pitkin and Boulder counties.

Former U.S. Attorneys for the District of Colorado Bob Troyer, who served under President Barack Obama, and Troy Eid, who served under President George W. Bush, are backing Dougherty — as is former Secretary of State Bernie Buescher.

Current and former legislators supporting Dougherty include state Sens. Judy Amabile, Janice Marchman and Tammy Story; state Reps. Kyle Brown and Karen McCormick; former state Senate President Steve Fenberberg; former state Sen. Rollie Heath; and former state Reps. Edie Hooton, Claire Levy, a Boulder County commissioner, and Jeni Arndt, the mayor of Fort Collins. Former Boulder County Commissioner and U.S. Senate nominee Josie Heath, the former state senator’s wife, is also a Dougherty endorser.

Former state Rep. Joe Salazar and attorney Brad Levin vied for the attorney general nomination in 2018 along with Dougherty and Weiser, who won the primary and the general election and was reelected in 2022. Salazar and Levin this week endorsed Dougherty in the 2026 attorney general primary, while Weiser, a candidate for governor, has yet to weigh in on the primary for the office he currently holds.

“We launched our campaign just one month ago, and I’m incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support from leaders across Colorado who share my commitment to justice, community safety, and protecting the rights of all Coloradans,” Dougherty said in a statement. “These endorsements reflect the trust so many have placed in my experience and vision for the Attorney General’s Office. Together, we will stand up for the rule of law and fight for the people of Colorado.”

Other Democrats who could join the primary for attorney general include term-limited Secretary of State Jena Griswold; 17th Judicial District Attorney Brian Mason — whose district includes Adams County and Broomfield — and David Seligman, executive director of Towards Justice, a Denver-based nonprofit law firm that represents workers.

No Republican candidates for the office have emerged.

Both major parties’ primaries are scheduled to take place next year on June 30, though the state Republican Party is likely to attempt to cancel the primary and instead nominate its candidates through the assembly process.
