Colorado teacher faces backlash over post about Donald Trump assassination attempt
A Colorado teacher faced a backlash after expressing disappointment that former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt on Saturday.
In a social media post, Jennifer Ripper, an elementary school teacher in Jefferson County, said: “Looks like he ALMOST got taken out.”
“My thoughts exactly,” she said in response to a post from someone who had commented, “Dammit !!! They missed !!”
“I’m a teacher. I think for myself and want others to do the same,” Ripper said. “No matter, now he’s a martyr.”
Trump was holding a rally in Butler on Saturday, Pennsylvania when a gunman shot him. A bullet pierced Trump’s ear. The former president was quickly whisked from the stage by Secret Service agents, his ear covered in blood. The gunman was killed and a bystander also died.
Ripper did not return requests for comment.
Her name has been taken off the staff list at Semper Elementary School. She was still listed as a teacher on the school’s website on July 15 — but not on July 16.
In an email, a spokesperson for JeffCo Public Schools confirmed that Ripper is an employee of the district.
The district also distanced itself from Ripper’s social media post. “Please know that Jeffco Public Schools does not endorse violence of any kind,” the district said in a statement to The Denver Gazette.
“The District has social media guidance that encourages our employees to conduct themselves in a professional manner and refrain from posting inappropriate content on personal social media channels.”
The district added: “While our employees are entitled to their own perspectives, please know that when they share those perspectives, they are not speaking on behalf of our district.”
Calls to the district were being routed to a recorded message that appeared to acknowledge the controversy over Ripper’s post.
“Thanks for reaching out to share your concern about the social media post,” the recording said.
Ripper appears to have taken down her LinkedIn account. She described herself as an experienced special education teacher with a “demonstrated history of working with students with challenging behaviors and students identified as twice-exceptional.”
The social media group Libs of Tik Tok first brought attention to Ripper’s post.
Others chimed in. “Does this fit with the mission statement of Semper Elementary?” the Jefferson County Republican Party said. “Jennifer Ripper just told Rep Woodrow to hold her beer,” Rep Brandi Bradley, a Republican, said on X.
Bradley was referring to state Rep. Steven Woodrow, a Democrat who deleted his X account after tweeting that the “last thing America needed was sympathy for the devil” following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump on Saturday.
Woodrow faced backlash from both Republicans and members of his own party. “The last thing America needed was sympathy for the devil but here we are,” Woodrow had tweeted.
In a statement, Woodrow called his tweet “inarticulate” and apologized “that my words caused additional pain.”
“Just when you think comments can’t get any worse, you have a teacher condoning violence,” Bradley added.
