Trump campaign’s former Colorado state director takes on Republican convention, delegate-support role
Justin Everett, the former Jefferson County legislator who oversaw Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in Colorado earlier this year, is helping organize next month’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, party and campaign officials told Colorado Politics.
The shift in focus for the veteran political consultant comes as the Trump campaign consolidates operations with the Republican National Committee after the former president secured the GOP nomination this spring, the officials said.
Trump’s campaign hired Everett as its state director in January, just days after the Colorado Republican Party broke with tradition to endorse Trump ahead of the state’s Super Tuesday presidential primary. Weeks later, Trump defeated Nikki Haley in Colorado by a 30-point margin, winning all of the state’s delegates to the RNC.
A spokeswoman for the RNC described Everett’s expanded roles in an emailed statement.
“Since the spring, the Trump campaign and the RNC have brought a streamlined collaboration to all 2024 operations,” the RNC’s Rachel Lee said. “In this case, Justin Everett is moving into a position with a focus on the 2024 Convention and delegate support, which is just weeks away. The groundwork established during the primary and moving toward victory in November includes operations in Colorado and every state across the country.”
Republicans are set to nominate Trump for a third time at the party’s national convention in Milwaukee, scheduled to take place from July 15 to July 18.
Chris LaCivita, the RNC’s chief of staff and senior advisor to the Trump campaign, meanwhile, declined to go into detail about the campaign’s operation in Colorado going forward.
“The Trump Campaign and the RNC will work as one well-funded and efficient machine with one stated goal — to defeat the Democrats on November 5th,” LaCivita said in an emailed statement. “By combining forces and operations, The Trump campaign and RNC are deploying operations that are fueled by passionate volunteers who care about saving America and firing Joe Biden.”
Added LaCivita: “We do not feel obligated however to discuss the specifics of our strategy, timing and tactics with members of the News Media.”
Everett, who didn’t respond to a request for comment, represented a Jefferson County house district for three terms from 2013-2019. He lost a run for state treasurer in 2018 and mounted an unsuccessful primary challenge in 2020 against the Republican who took over his old legislative seat.
Trump hasn’t campaigned in Colorado since early 2020, when the then-president held a rally in Colorado Springs just weeks before the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Democrat Joe Biden carried Colorado that fall by 13.5 points, marking the fourth presidential election in a row when the state’s electoral votes went to the Democratic nominee.
