Colorado ranked No. 3 most dangerous state in new report

Colorado ranked as one of the “most dangerous” states in the U.S. in a new report and it’s mostly because of a high rate of property crime.

U.S. News and World Report last week released its 2024 Best States rankings and although Colorado finished in a respectable 16th place overall, it received poor marks for public safety, ranking No. 3 most dangerous.

The rankings were determined by factoring both violent crime and property crime rates in each state using FBI data from 2022, the report said.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:11095963150525286,size:[0, 0],id:”ld-2426-4417″});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src=”//cdn2.lockerdomecdn.com/_js/ajs.js”;j.id=i;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,”script”,”ld-ajs”);

“For its part, the FBI notes that numerous factors can affect the amount and type of crime in different areas, including population density, economic conditions, climate and family cohesiveness,” the report said.

The data showed Colorado had a violent crime rate of 492 violent crimes for every 100,000 residents. Meanwhile, its property crime rate was 3,148 property crimes for every 100,000 residents.

While Colorado’s violent crime rate ranked below most of the other states ranked in the Top 10 “most dangerous” states list, its property crime rate was second worst. Only Washington State had a higher rate of property crime.

In the overall rankings, only Louisiana and New Mexico ranked as being more dangerous than Colorado, according to the report. Those states also finished 50th and 49th, respectively, in the overall “best state” rankings.
