With temperatures forecasted in the 80s and 90s for the foreseeable future, law enforcement officials are also bringing the heat as extra DUI enforcement will hit Colorado’s roadways on Friday. 

The Colorado Department of Transportation and Colorado State Patrol in partnership with local law enforcement agencies will have extra enforcement on the roads through June 21.

Last year during the Summer Blitz DUI Enforcement period, 407 impaired drivers were arrested, according to a release from CDOT.

“Summer is the season for barbecues, camping, and family vacation. It’s also a time when we see a rise in impaired drivers,” said CSP Chief Matthew Packard. “Don’t let your good time turn into dangerous, risk-taking behaviors. Make sure that you are sober, distraction-free, and buckled up every time you get behind the wheel.”

In the most recent DUI enforcement period over Memorial Day weekend, 209 drivers were arrested, which was nearly 10% lower than the same period last year, according to the release.

The Colorado Springs Police Department made the most arrest with 24 during the enforcement period, followed by the Denver Police Department and CSP with 18 each.

“We want Colorado residents and visitors to travel safely and arrive at their summer destinations without incident,” said Darrell Lingk, CDOT’s office of transportation safety director. “Impaired drivers pose an entirely preventable threat on our transportation system. This makes DUI enforcement and education truly critical as we aim to reduce deaths, injuries and crashes on Colorado roads.”
