Some Coloradans unable to see immunization records in new state portal; issue will not affect $5 million contest

Some Coloradans can’t see their vaccination status in the state’s newly launched portal, a health department spokeswoman said Thursday, though the issue will not have an effect on those people’s chances to win the $1 million vaccine contest.

The state launched its digital portal recently to allow residents to quickly access – and prove – their vaccination status. But, the state Department of Public Health and Environment said Thursday, some residents are unable to pull up those records because providers have misspelled their name or otherwise mis-entered their patients’ information.

The release corresponded with Gov. Jared Polis announcing the beginning of an incentive program that will see five vaccinated Coloradans win $1 million each between June 4 and July 7. The portal problems will not cause issues with the sweepstakes, the state said. Even if there’s a misspelling or mis-transcribed phone number, Colorado Lottery officials – who are running the contest – will still be able to find the patient in question.

In order to use the portal, Coloradans enter their name, birthday, gender and phone number. If that information is incorrect – say, if John is accidentally spelled Jon – the information won’t pull up. There may also be a lag time between when a person is vaccinated and when the provider enters their information, though a spokeswoman for the state said that “89% of all COVID doses have been reported to (the state immunization system) within 72 hours of the vaccine administration date.”

It’s unclear of the scale of the problem, but the state has heard from an increasing number of people in recent days.

“Prior to the announcement of the (state incentive) drawing, the help desk received 5-10 calls a day,” Heather Roth, the program manager of the Colorado Immunization Information System, said in an email. “It is now receiving about 40 calls a day. Emails also have increased, and right now, there is a 1-2 day turnaround for responses.”
