43 CU students on probation, four suspended for March 6 riot
The University of Colorado Boulder has placed 43 students on probation and suspended another four students in connection to the March 6 party that turned into a riot, according to the university.
The disturbance began as a party near 10th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in the University Hill neighborhood around 5 p.m. Around 800 people attended the event, which violated the city’s COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings.
When officers arrived, around 100 of the partygoers began pelting officers with glass bottles, which prompted the activation of the Boulder Police Department’s SWAT Unit.
Additionally, members of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Longmont Police Department and Colorado State Patrol assisted with the incident.
SWAT officers were hit with bricks and rocks, leaving two SWAT members injured.
By 9 p.m., attendees stole a vehicle and three street signs. They also damaged eight other vehicles, an armored rescue vehicle and fire truck. In total, $43,500 worth of damages were made by the party-goers, according to the city.
To date, 96 students have been referred to student conduct.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
