Democratic presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar on Wednesday announced hires for her Colorado campaign, including veterans of Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet’s White House bid and other political operatives with experience in the state.

The staffing announcement comes one day before the Minnesota senator is set to make her third visit to Colorado for a town hall-style event Thursday in Aurora.

“Coloradans are looking for a president who has the experience and record to win and bring people together – Amy Klobuchar is that leader,” said Joe Kabourek, Klobuchar’s state director and until last week a key member of Bennet’s national political staff.

“As our team in the Centennial State grows, we’re excited to continue discussing Amy’s plans to unite the country with voters across Colorado.”

Bennet withdrew from the primary on Feb. 11 after an underwhelming performance in the New Hampshire primary.

Klobuchar is one of eight major Democratic candidates on Colorado’s primary ballot. Voters have until March 3 to return their mail ballots or vote in person.

The other members of Klobuchar’s Colorado staff include deputy state directors Tommy Walker and Jackson Sump, state communication director Mitch Schwartz, state political director Camilo Vilaseca and Colorado field director Britta Moen.

Kabourek was Bennet’s ballot access director and deputy national political director. Before that, he was executive director of the Democratic Party of New Mexico, helming the party though the 2018 election when it won all 11 statewide and federal races.

Walker, who grew up in Boulder, was deputy chief of staff in Washington, D.C., for U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, who represents Colorado’s 1st Congressional District. Before that, he worked in Klobuchar’s Senate office, with a focus on the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, and in DeGette’s office with the Energy and Commerce Committee.

Sump was Klobuchar’s organizing director in Iowa ahead of that state’s caucuses. He worked before that as get-out-the-vote director for the Minnesota DFL’s successful coordinated campaign, and has a history as a campaign manager in the Midwest, including Rebecc Otto’s 2018 run for governor of Minnesota and Brad Schneider’s winning 2016 congressional run in Illinois.

Schwartz was Bennet’s deputy press secretary and was communications director for U.S. Rep. Jason Crow’s successful 2018 campaign in Colorado’s 6th Congressional District. Prior to that, he worked in the New York office of public affairs and political consulting firm SKDKnickerbocker. He’s also worked for NextGen Climate and the New York City Council.

Vilaseca was Bennet’s early states field director. Last year, he was get-out-the-vote director for Denver Mayor Michael Hancock’s winning campaign for a third term, and he managed state Rep. Bri Buentello’s win in southern Colorado in 2018.

Moen was Klobuchar’s regional organizing director for Northeast Iowa. Previously, the Minnesota native she worked on U.S. Sen. Tina Smith’s special election campaign in Minnesota.
