Denver adds more ballot boxes in advance of presidential primary election
Four new ballot drop-off boxes will be added around Denver in advance of next month’s presidential primary election – the state’s first since 2000.
The newest additions bring Denver’s 24-hour boxes up to 37, according to the Denver Elections Division.
“These additional boxes will help us continue to fill in gaps while also providing additional access to people who work downtown, young voters pursuing a vocational education, students on the Auraria Campus and voters in our largest active older adult community,” Denver’s Clerk and Recorder Paul López said in a Tuesday press release.
In the November 2018’s general election, more than 160,000 Denverites dropped their ballots in the boxes.
“We expect that number to continue to trend upwards in 2020,” López said.
In the wake of this month’s Democratic presidential caucuses in Iowa that resulted in errors and delays, the Clerk and Recorder’s office reassured residents that “their votes are safe” in the upcoming elections.
“It is important to remember that the caucuses in Iowa were conducted by the state political parties, and not by election professionals,” Denver Elections Director Jocelyn Bucaro wrote in a letter posted to the clerk’s social media.
Unlike the Iowa Democratic Party, which used a phone app to tally the results, Colorado county elections offices are solely responsible for counting votes. The process is followed up with several rounds of audits.
Starting this week, voters will begin receiving their ballot packets in the mail for the March 3 presidential primary election.
“Voters should be assured that their vote remains secure and they can trust the results reported from election professionals are accurate,” Bucaro wrote.
In addition to Denver’s existing drop box locations, voters can now utilize the following locations as well:
? Athmar Recreation Center | 2860 W. Mexico Ave.
? Emily Griffith Technical College | 1860 N. Lincoln St.
? Tivoli Student Union Auraria Campus | 900 Auraria Pkwy
? Windsor Gardens | 595 S. Clinton St.
