The Idaho Springs city council on Monday night approved April 7 as the election date for a recall of Mayor Mike Hillman.

The Clear Creek Courant reports that the city attorney advised that because of the presidential primary election on March 3, there were limited options to schedule an election within a 90-day limit. Council members also approved hiring a consultant to assist the city clerk with the election.

Multiple residents commented upon the waste of money and negative publicity that they felt would result from the recall.

The Colorado Sun in December found that anxiety about development was driving the effort. Organizers specifically cited Hillman for “significant erosion of confidence in town government during his administration,” “failure to adequately supervise planning staff,” and “allowing unresolved conflicts of interest by town board members to occur.”

Idaho Springs’ recall will take place on the same date as a recall of four trustees in the town of Elizabeth, plus its mayor. The first round of recalls in Elizabeth in December resulted in two trustees narrowly ousted. As with Idaho Springs, some Elizabeth residents are unhappy with the pace of development.

“Recent residential developments were approved in response to a need for a more diverse and attainable housing stock in the Elizabeth area,” Mayor Megan Vasquez told Colorado Politics, adding that the alternative to annexing land into the town was to have Elbert County control the zoning.

Residents interested in replacing Hillman must return candidate petitions by Feb. 3.
