Colorado’s insurance commissioner receives consumer advocacy award
State Insurance Commissioner Michael Conway received the Consumer Representative Excellence in Consumer Advocacy award at a meeting of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in Austin on Monday.
Conway said he is “extremely proud” of his employees, adding, “our work is a vital component in Governor Polis’ mission of making health care more accessible and affordable for Coloradans.”
In presenting the award, the consumer representatives, who work with the NAIC and state regulators, cited the work of the Division of Insurance in enforcing protections for Colorado residents with chronic health conditions and nondiscrimination against LBGTQ people. Conway’s office is also engaging relevant parties in the development of a new public option health insurance proposal.
“In addition to his leadership in Colorado, Commissioner Conway devotes a significant amount of time to promoting consumer interests at the NAIC,” the consumer representatives added. He is involved with multiple groups within the organization, including as chair of the NAIC/American Indian and Alaska Native Liaison Committee.
Conway oversees regulation of the insurance insurance industry in Colorado. Prior to his current role, he was a deputy commissioner and interim commissioner. From 2010 to 2016, he worked in the attorney general’s, also working on insurance cases.
