Johnston to head Gary Community Investments in 2020
Former state Sen. Mike Johnston will be the new president and CEO of a Denver-based investment company with a social justice outlook.
Gary Community Investments made the announcement on Thursday, saying Johnston will begin his new job in January 2020.
“I am honored and humbled to join this talented team of people who are committed to delivering historic results for Colorado children and families,” said Johnston in a statement.
Johnson was a Democratic senator representing Northeast Denver from 2009 to 2017. He recently was a candidate in the 2018 governor’s race and for the 2020 U.S. Senate seat. Before entering policies, Johnston was a school principal and an adviser to Barack Obama.
Gary Community Investments is a B-Corporation Certified company. According to the Pennsylvania-based nonprofit that evaluates companies seeking certification, businesses must meet “the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.”
The Colorado Sun reports that there are 95 such companies in the state.
Gary’s most recent investments include Rocky Mountain Prep charter school, the childhood development and infant mental health program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and Teach for America.
