What they are saying: Coloradans respond to DACA oral arguments

On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case that will decide whether the Trump Administration can end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program on charges that it is illegal and unconstitutional.

DACA is an Obama-era initiative to shield undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children from deportation. Approximately 700,000 individuals have taken part, including more than 17,000 in Colorado as of March 2017.

Here is how Colorado’s policymakers and advocacy groups reacted:

“President Trump’s decision to abruptly end the DACA program put the fate of hundreds of thousands of young people and families in Colorado and across the country on the line. Since the first day of this administration, our nation’s Dreamers, and all immigrant communities, have been under assault from President Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda. The president’s actions have undermined our nation’s values and forced millions of families to live in fear and uncertainty. The Supreme Court must uphold the rulings of lower courts across the country that found the president violated U.S. law when he ended DACA. And, Congress must work together to find a legislative solution to protect Dreamers.” – U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet

“This is their home, the only land most have ever known; they arrived, on average, at the age of 6. But they are being forced to live in fear because of an administration determined to deport them – an administration that violates our values and dishonors our heritage….Just as telling: nearly 1,000 now serve in uniform. So Dreamers are making America richer – and safer – every day.” -Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Romanoff

“Fighting for the #Dreamers is about 15,000 Coloradans whose lives are on the line. These individuals, like Fryda, are young, scrappy, and hungry. The @COAttnyGeneral‘s Office is now challenging the decision to end #DACA as illegal, inhumane, and wrong.” – Attorney General Phil Weiser

“Like so many towns & cities across the US, #HomeIsHere for #Dreamers in my community. They are our friends, neighbors, & colleagues. It’s been 7+ years since President Obama implemented #DACA – now it’s time for Congress to #ProtectTheDream.” – U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter

“As a DACA recipient, I know how important this program is for young people to achieve their American dream. Deferred action has allowed me the opportunity to gain lawful employment in the U.S. It has allowed me to pursue my dreams and to protect the environment and planet for future generations by supporting the training of environmental leaders from Latino community members…. I fear that our gains in civic participation will be eroded by a president and administration intent on targeting the same folks who already live on the frontlines of many injustices. We will keep a close eye on the Supreme Court decision because we know that for many young climate champions and their family members #HomeIsHere.” -Juan Gallegos of Conservation Colorado

“DACA was fully consistent with the nation’s immigration laws and was a permissible – and, indeed, sensible -exercise of the discretion Congress conferred on the executive to implement those laws. Accordingly, the decision to terminate DACA on the ground that it was unlawful was itself ‘arbitrary, capricious, an abuse of discretion, or otherwise not in accordance with law,’  in violation of the [Administrative Procedure Act].” – A brief filed in support of DACA, signed by U.S. Reps. Diana DeGette, Joe Neguse, and Jason Crow; former U.S. Sens. Gary Hart and Mark Udall; and former U.S. Rep. David Skaggs

Alejandro Flores-Munoz, a partner in operating Stokes Poké, was brought to the United States when he was 7 years old and is lawfully in the country under the DACA program.
